What is the Principal's Recommendation Scheme?

Jan 28, 2021

Local students who have Macau ID have the opportunity to apply to many universities in Macau, Taiwan, and Mainland China through schemes called Principal’s Recommendation (PR). We have been using these schemes for many, many years with great success. Universities continue to give TIS the opportunity to recommend top students. They may be asked to do a test and many of the universities require an interview. Some universities require that students be top ranked students in their class, some look for students who have special talents, some have a maximum number of opportunities, some leave it to us to determine who should be recommended and others use a combination of criteria.

How does the PR process work at TIS?
At TIS, students notify us of their intent to apply to university in the spring of their grade 11 year through BridgeU, a platform that helps students and schools make university and career choices and manage the university application process. Students who have done their research and indicated that they are considering Macau, Taiwan, or Mainland China as an option will be contacted in the fall to attend an information session to show their interest. We will determine which students we will be recommending depending on university requirements, student interest, mark ranking, and special talents. Special talents might be of an artistic nature or sporting success. At TIS, students may be recommended to more than one university. Not all students who request a recommendation will receive one.

Student and staff responsibilities for the PR Schemes
Students are required to demonstrate their interest early in the fall. They need to do research to determine which university they would like to apply to, what program they are applying to, and reasons for their choices. TIS will meet with students in the spring of grade 11, offer an information session, and determine who will qualify for the schemes. We will make sure all forms are filled in accurately, write reference letters, and assist students in preparing for interviews.

Class of 2021 results
This year, we had a record number of students applying using the Principal’s Recommendation schemes and processed 33 applications to 11 different institutions. Twenty-seven students received invitations to attend an interview or received an offer. It is still a competitive process and not everyone is guaranteed an offer. MUST was the university who received the most requests. We are very proud of the eight students who applied and received offers from MUST. Many students received offers from their first choice school. Some of these schools are very competitive and their admission rates are very low.

“As the largest multi-disciplinary university in Macao, MUST strives to nourish local talents and we are glad to have students from TIS who achieve academic excellence and high moral standard joining us through the recommendation scheme.”

“The PR scheme has provided me an opportunity to apply to universities in Macau and China along with other students in our community. With the help from our school’s academic counsellors, I have been successfully accepted to my first choice university. I could be exempted from long admission procedures and I have also gained interview experiences from the process. Overall, the PR scheme has opened me to more university choices and I really encourage future students to consider this system during their university applications.”
Natalie Au
High school student of The International School of Macao

“The PR schemes allow students to not only have a higher chance of getting into the university we want, but also reduce the amount of stress from applying to universities. I applied to my first choice through principle recommendations and got the offer without any additional conditions. The PR schemes were a life saver for me.”

If your family is interested in the Principal’s Recommendation schemes in the future, students should be pushing themselves now to develop excellent study skills. They should be doing their best to achieve the highest grades they are capable of and developing talents outside of the classroom. If they are in Grade 11, they should be booking appointments with their Academic Counsellors to plan for their future.

澳門國際學校學生將於高二年級約春季時份透過BridgeU(一個協助學生及學校選擇大學及就業管理的平台)完成意願申報。

Henry Lo

Natalie Au
