TIS IB Art Exhibition 2026
The International School of Macao (TIS) celebrated the annual International Baccalaureate (IB) Art Exhibition with Opening Night on Tuesday, March 24th, 2026. The exhibition marked the culmination of two years of intensive study for 12 IB Visual Arts students, providing a professional platform to debut their curated portfolios.
From concept to installation, students managed every phase of the exhibition, developing ideas, executing techniques and selecting the final presentation. Under the guidance of Mark Jalland, the IB Art Teacher, students were encouraged to apply contemporary methods of guided students in developing conceptual and contextual analysis as they developed distinct visual voices.
“This is a superb exhibition with a wide range of art styles. The students have really developed a personal approach. There is something for everyone.” Mr. Jalland stated.
Lorne Schmidt, TIS Head of School, noted that the exhibition celebrates the creative ambition of the students and the school’s educational priorities.
“This exhibition demonstrated the alignment between the educational philosophy of TIS and the core values of the IB programme, both of which prioritize creative-thinking, exploring and extending personal interests as well as taking on challenges.”
The IB curriculum treats art as a rigorous academic inquiry, balancing intensive studio work with deep analysis. This multifaceted approach ensures students become critical thinkers capable of articulating the social contexts of their work. The success of this program is reflected in alumni who gain admission to prestigious institutions worldwide, such as Hong Kong University (ranked 11th globally), University of Sydney (ranked 25th globally), University of Toronto (ranked 29th globally), University of the Arts London (UAL) (ranked 2nd globally by subject), Pratt Institute and Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) (ranked 4th globally by subject), where they pursue majors in Fine Art, Architecture and Digital Art.
A product of faculty mentorship and student initiative, the exhibition not only highlights exceptional student work but also underscores TIS’s commitment to arts education. By elevating emerging young artists, the school further enriches Macao’s local art community and inspires a new generation of creative leaders within the region.
