Underwater, Desert and Rainforest... Grade 3 Classrooms are Looking Wild!
When walking down the corridors, you may find some TIS Tigers living in very particular environments, as Grade 3 have completely transformed their classrooms into life-sized biomes! As part of their Science unit, students worked together to produce this immersive learning experience, creating everything from the hanging cup jellyfish to the paper plate monkeys!
This engaging project allowed students to explore different subjects, including art, technology and nonfiction writing. When adding elements to the habitats, students chose an animal, recreated them out of various materials, and filmed a short introduction video about their lifestyle and natural habits. Students also learned about painting styles, such as Henri Rousseau’s naïve art and Andy Warhol's pop art, while recreating patterns in nature.
Finally, there was an exciting opportunity to talk to experts in the field! Through the “Skype a Scientist” programme, students met zoologist Dr. McKenna and got to ask their most pressing animal questions. Similarly, as part of the Activist in Residence programme, students had a workshop with marine scientist Dr. Andreia Ramos, who showcased all the different ways in which animals communicate, and how she uses a sound meter to capture these sounds, even underwater!
