Chinese Learning as a Pathway to Global Citizenship
At The International School of Macao (TIS), we believe that language is more than just a tool for communication; it is a bridge that connects cultures, fosters understanding, and prepares students to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world. Our approach to language acquisition highlights that early childhood is the ideal time to lay the groundwork for bilingualism and cultural fluency. Drawing influence from the Reggio Emilia approach, it emphasizes child-centered, inquiry-based learning, alongside the International Baccalaureate (IB) framework, which fosters critical thinking and global-mindedness. Together, these philosophies guide our curriculum design, ensuring that students are active participants in their learning journey.

Kindergarten Enhanced Chinese Program
In line with this vision, we are excited to introduce our Kindergarten Enhanced Chinese Program, set to launch next year, with our pre-kindergarten classes. This program is designed to nurture global citizens who are not only bilingual but also bicultural, equipped with the skills and mindset to navigate and contribute to a diverse global community.
By immersing young learners in a dual-language environment, we aim to cultivate not only linguistic proficiency but also cross-cultural understanding and adaptability—essential qualities for future global leaders.
As part of this immersive experience, children will participate in activities like storytelling in both Chinese and English, which will help them appreciate the nuances of each language while developing empathy for different cultural perspectives. This early exposure to bilingualism will prepare them to communicate effectively and collaborate across cultures in the future. For example, in a unit exploring the theme of "Community," students might investigate how people communicate in different cultures. Through hands-on activities like creating bilingual posters or role-playing scenarios in both Chinese and English, they will develop language skills while gaining a deeper understanding of cultural diversity.

Theme-Aligned, Language-Switching
In addition to thematic learning, a unique feature of our Kindergarten Enhanced Chinese Program is its seamless integration with our English curriculum. Using a “theme-aligned, language-switching” approach, we teach the same thematic content in both languages. This ensures that students deepen their understanding of concepts while strengthening their language skills.
Understanding the diverse backgrounds of our students, we adopt a student-centered and differentiated approach to teaching. Through immersive learning, dual-language strategies, and AI-powered tools, we provide personalised support tailored to each student’s needs.

Beyond The Classroom
Moreover, parents play a vital role in their children’s language learning journey. Through regular workshops, parent-teacher meetings, and cultural events, we equip families with the tools and knowledge to support their children’s bilingual development at home.
Beyond the classroom, our Kindergarten Enhanced Chinese Program extends through a variety of cultural and language-enrichment activities. From Chinese cultural festivals,to storytelling sessions, language games, and themed explorations, we provide students with authentic opportunities to use Chinese in meaningful contexts.
For instance, during Chinese New Year, students might create traditional decorations, learn about the significance of the zodiac animals, and watch a lion dance performance. These experiences not only enhance language skills but also deepen students’ appreciation for Chinese culture and traditions.

Chinese As A Pathway To Global Citizenship
Ultimately, at TIS, we believe that learning Chinese is more than just acquiring a language; it is a pathway to global citizenship. By mastering Chinese, our students gain access to one of the world’s oldest and richest cultures, as well as a critical language for global communication and collaboration. More importantly, they develop the empathy, adaptability, and intercultural competence needed to thrive in a multicultural world.
As we prepare to launch our Kindergarten Enhanced Chinese Program , we are excited to embark on this journey with our students and their families. Together, we are shaping the next generation of global citizens—confident, compassionate, and ready to make a positive impact on the world.
