2nd Annual TIS ECE Conference
The International School of Macao (TIS) held the 2nd annual TIS Early Childhood Education (ECE) Conference on February 21-22, 2025, bringing together educators and specialists in the field of early childhood education from Singapore, Thailand, Korea, Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR and mainland China. The event featured prominent attendees, including the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) Acting Head of the Division of Infant and Primary Education Ms. Ka Si In, and DSEDJ School Inspection Coordinator Ms. Cristina Fong Ieok Mui. TIS Head of School Lorne Schmidt welcomed keynote speaker Anne van Dam, an internationally recognized inquiry-based educator from the Netherlands.

Anne van Dam, who has worked with international schools around the globe and has over 25 years of ECE experience, delivered a compelling keynote address titled “Growing Global Citizens Through Courage, Passion, and Character.” In her session, Anne van Dam explored the evolving educational landscape and emphasized the importance of equipping young learners with essential skills for the 21st century.
In addition to the keynote address, the conference featured a series of sessions led by TIS's experienced educators, covering a wide range of critical topics. Sessions included discussions on global citizenship in early education, the integration of AI in IB PYP ECE classrooms, fostering independent inquiry in kindergarten, and instilling courage and character through physical education. Attendees engaged in meaningful conversations and gained valuable insights aimed at enhancing their teaching practices and supporting the holistic development of children.
Furthermore, recognizing that education is a shared responsibility, TIS organized an exclusive parent session with keynote speaker Anne van Dam on February 20, 2025. This special session was carefully designed to guide parents and guardians in understanding how acquisition of learning skills can be developed through play-based inquiry. Through interactive discussions, Anne shared her innovative approaches and deep understanding of child development, encouraging parents to play an active role in their children's educational journey.
“It really is about schools with this position. Starting the foundation early, we build skills and children who are communicators, inquisitive, open minded, and empathetic, setting them up to be engaged citizens” Anne van Dam stated “Being at TIS is always such a joy, returning to this community is really quite special”
TIS remains dedicated to creating a nurturing and stimulating environment for young learners, empowering them with the skills necessary for future success. By hosting educational conferences and providing diverse learning opportunities, TIS aims to cultivate a community of lifelong learners committed to contributing positively to our global society.
