TIS Officially Receives IB PYP Authorization!
The International School of Macao (TIS) is pleased to announce that it has officially received full authorization to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) following a rigorous evaluation by the International Baccalaureate Organisation. As of January 6th, 2025, the School has become an authorized IB PYP institution, marking a significant step forward in providing high-quality international education.
As a PYP candidate school, TIS developed and implemented the PYP framework into their teaching approach, focusing extensively on teacher training, curriculum development, and acting on recommendations from IB officers. To achieve authorization status, the IB organization conducted a thorough evaluation of the PYP implementation at TIS, assessing the school’s educational philosophy, leadership and management structure, educational practices, as well as the resource support for the program. A detailed review of the curriculum design, the execution of inquiry-based teaching, and learning assessments was conducted during the IB team verification visit in November, 2024. Ultimately, TIS resoundingly met all criteria for offering the PYP Programme, receiving commendations in 12 specific areas, resulting in the awarding of official IB PYP authorization.
The PYP is an inquiry-driven, transdisciplinary, student-centered program aimed at developing the whole child. This educational framework creates a stimulating and challenging environment for students aged 3 to 12, fostering overall growth and encouraging lifelong learning. As a student-centered approach, the IB Primary Years Programme aligns seamlessly with TIS’s existing Alberta Curriculum, making this transition a calculated step toward advancing international education.
PYP integrates a wide range of subject areas, including social studies, mathematics, science, technology, arts, and personal, social, and physical education. Additionally, students are required to study a second language throughout the program.
TIS Head of School Lorne Schmidt stated:
“Receiving the IB PYP authorization is a significant affirmation of the quality of our educational programme at TIS. We are committed to providing our students with an innovative and effective learning environment. This globally recognised approach to teaching and learning will further enhance our teaching standards and practices, and provides a solid framework for the holistic development of our students.”
With this new IB PYP authorization, TIS continues to uphold the educational philosophy of the IB, promoting student learning and growth in a global context. We look forward to continuing to provide quality international education to more students in the future and nurturing them to become global citizens with international perspectives and critical thinking skills.
