Building Better Collaboration with Families for Student Success
When we talk about student success, one theme consistently rises to the top: collaboration between families and schools. At TIS, we believe that strong relationships are the backbone of effective education. By working together, families and teachers can better understand the needs of our students and address areas for improvement that may be affecting their learning.
While we focus on the social, emotional, and academic aspects of child development, the foundation of our partnerships rests on open, honest, and respectful communication. Here are some practical ways families can engage with the school community and build your connection to your child’s educational experience.
Use Learning to Open Communication
Technology can be a valuable tool to open up communication and have conversations about your child’s learning. Through platforms like Seesaw, you can gain insights into what your child is exploring each week. This supports students in consolidating their learning and gives us as families an opportunity to engage in meaningful discussion and exploration. As children get older, encourage them to share what they are learning in their Google Classroom or other educational tools they use for learning to see the skills they are practicing and the content they are exploring.
Join School Events and Conversations
There are many school events that also foster collaboration and that can support your child’s success. Events like Coffee Chats are great for connecting with other families, learning about areas of child development, and sharing strategies for supporting your child at home. The TISPA meetings offer insight into the school, ways to ask questions and further find and connect with families that can share advice and support. It is not just the school that can offer advice and expertise, but our families in the community can be a valuable resource as we support our children growing up.
Recently, I attended the Grade 6 UOI celebration, and seeing families at the event was truly special. Children having the opportunity to highlight their learning together and show how their work can have a meaningful impact within the wider community. When families participate, it reinforces to students that their education matters, not just to them but to their families and the entire school.
Meet the Teacher
Meeting your child’s teacher can be a daunting idea for a family, but it is an important part of school and building connections. These meetings are a chance to ask questions and learn more about your child’s progress, as well as how to better support them at home. It is always best to communicate your goals for the meeting, allowing the teacher to arrange a suitable time and provide the most relevant information. These meetings are about coming together, as we ultimately want the same outcome, and that is the success of the child in all areas of their lives.
Let us work together
As we focus on building community and collaboration, let’s remember that our partnership plays a vital role in shaping the future of our students. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in our children’s educational journey. When families and education unite their efforts, we enhance our children’s learning experience and also foster a sense of belonging and purpose that lasts a lifetime. I am proud of our commitment to this collaborative spirit, helping every child shape their own futures by ensuring they have the opportunity to succeed and thrive in all aspects of their lives.
