Student Agency in Action: From Purpose to Ivy League Success

Apr 06, 2026

At TIS, we believe that meaningful achievement begins with student agency. While mentorship, structure, and opportunity are essential, it is the student’s initiative, curiosity, resilience, and willingness to lead that drive authentic growth.

Cloris Yan’s journey exemplifies this principle.

Leadership Initiated Through Student Vision

Cloris’ accomplishments in music reflect more than technical mastery. They demonstrate intentional initiative and commitment. From premiering a concerto as a Chinese bamboo flute soloist accompanied by the Macau Chinese Orchestra to serving as flute sectional leader in inter-school Honour Band exchanges, her achievements reflect goal setting and disciplined independent practice.

Significantly, although not an assigned project, Cloris founded and directed the Hot Pot Band. She blended minority instruments across cultures and transformed it into a performing ensemble. She recruited members, arranged repertoire, coordinated rehearsals, navigated logistics, and reflected on performance outcomes.

In this process, TIS functioned not as the architect of her pathway but as a facilitator. The school provided rehearsal space, faculty mentorship, and performance platforms that amplified her initiative.

Cloris led. The school supported.

Resilience as Intentional Growth

Cloris’s athletic accomplishments further demonstrate the role of student agency. After recovering from an injury, she looked closely at her technical weaknesses, improved her competitive strategy, and changed her training approach. The result was First Place at the Macau Inter School Fencing Competition.

This achievement reflects more than competitive success. Her documented reflections on distance control, counterattack timing, and mental preparation reveal a student actively engaged in self assessment and strategic improvement.

Coaches offered guidance. Cloris implemented change.

At TIS, resilience develops when students are empowered to confront challenges directly and take responsibility for their own progress.

Inquiry Beyond the Classroom

Cloris consistently works independently in her academics and extracurricular pursuits. She regularly extends what she learns in the classroom to real-world issues, actively participating in and leading a range of interdisciplinary research and community initiatives. For example, she has undertaken inquiries in fields such as ecological conservation, marine science, and global affairs. She has also chaired multiple in-school committees, as well as built a population model for local egrets to guide policy and community discussions. In Model United Nations conferences, she has shown exceptional critical thinking and leadership, earning international-level recognition.

These efforts are not just following existing programs, they grow of her own curiosity. She identifies areas of interest, formulates ideas, seeks feedback, and continually refines her work through reflection and revision. While teacher guidance provides academic structure and support, the direction of her research and the persistence behind it come from Cloris herself.

Service Rooted in Purpose

At TIS, service is understood as a reflective practice. Students are encouraged to evaluate their contributions, adjust their approach, and deepen their understanding of community needs. Cloris exemplifies a learner who shapes her service with purpose rather than simply fulfilling a requirement.

Her story goes beyond individual achievement. It shows a student who guides her own growth within a community that values independence, reflection, and ambition.

Partnership at TIS is about empowerment. That empowerment helps students like Cloris transform potential into purposeful action.
