From Page to Stage

Last week, 18 students from Grades 9 to 12 took part in a behind-the-scenes tour of The Venetian Theatre, providing them with a rare glimpse into the inner workings of live performance. Guided by Drama teacher Thom Ferlisi, the visit offered a hands-on look at the collaborative engine that powers professional theatre.

Students met with production coordinators and designers, and even a TIS alum now working in the field. They explored various aspects of production, including costume construction and prop design.

Theatre Arts at TIS is more than just performance; it’s a form of art that shapes identity. With productions staged throughout the year, students are encouraged to engage with every department of the craft, and experiences like this deepen that journey, reminding us that the arts thrive when students see themselves reflected in the work.

As Mr. Ferlisi reflected:

“I hope that students find their place, a place where you can be who you are or be who you want to be” - Thom Ferlisi

For students, the impact was personal. Carolina, secondary student, shared:

“The arts program helped with my creative identity - if it wasn’t for that, I wouldn’t have discovered my passions”

Meeting alumna Kelly Vong (Class of 2017), whose journey from TIS student to theatre professional showed our students that the path from school stage to industry stage is real and attainable.

We extend our gratitude to The Venetian Theatre for opening its doors to our students and sharing the passion, precision, and creativity that make theatre such a transformative art.
