The International School of Macao (TIS) successfully held the EmpowHERed event on February 1, 2026, in collaboration with Macao University of Science and Technology (MUST). This fully student-led and student-organized initiative focused on empowering girls to envision a future within STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields. Open to the public, the event attracted participants aged 13 and over from across Macao, highlighting the strong interest in such opportunities.

Participants engaged in a variety of activities, including a 10-hour hackathon where they programmed, designed, and wrote visual novels, all while learning programming fundamentals in a dynamic setting. The event featured workshops covering diverse areas of STEM, such as 3D art and web programming, led by TIS Robotics Council students. The immersive learning experience encouraged attendees to take initiative, with many taking their first steps in this field and showcasing their innovative potential.

Special guest speakers included Dr. Sun Qiao and Dr. Yang Lei from the Faculty of Innovative Engineering, and Dr. Marta Filipa Simões from the State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences (SKLPlanets), all representing MUST. Additionally, two university students shared their experiences regarding university life and well-being. Together, they shared their personal journeys and insights from their different STEM fields, motivating young attendees to explore the vast possibilities within STEM education.

The EmpowHERed event serves not only as an educational experience but also a crucial platform for collaboration and exchange among girls and women in technology in Macao. This initiative aims to break gender stereotypes, promote diversity and inclusion, and build a supportive network for women in the STEM sector. Participants expressed newfound interest and confidence, eagerly looking forward to more opportunities like this in the future.
