Being Multilingual is a Superpower!

Nov 21, 2025 By Katie Orr, EAL Coordinator

In today’s interconnected world, being a multilingual learner is a remarkable superpower.

Multilingual learners bring a beautiful diversity of culture, tradition, education, backgrounds, experiences, and languages, all of which enrich our school community. The benefits of multilingualism extend beyond communication, encompassing social, cognitive, and academic advantages that support overall growth and development.

Multilingualism allows children to communicate with peers from diverse backgrounds, fostering understanding and collaboration. As they learn different languages, they also gain insights into various cultures, which helps them appreciate and have a deeper understanding of the world around them. This ability to connect with others is invaluable, as it prepares them for a future where teamwork and global awareness are essential.

Studies have shown that multilingual learners often demonstrate enhanced problem-solving skills and improved executive function abilities, which are crucial for academic success and daily life. The process of learning and using multiple languages requires individuals to think critically and adapt their thinking based on context. This cognitive flexibility allows them to approach challenges from various angles, making them more effective problem solvers.

A student’s home language serves as the foundation for learning other languages. The development of language and literacy skills in one language can support the development of parallel skills in a second or third language. Research shows that skills developed in a child’s home language such as vocabulary acquisition, grammar, and phonemic awareness—can seamlessly transfer to English learning. When students are encouraged to connect concepts and vocabulary from their home language to English, they develop a deeper understanding of both languages. As students leverage their home language skills, they become better at expressing complex ideas and participating actively in classroom discussions, ultimately leading to greater success in their educational journey.

Embracing multilingualism in our school community is not only a celebration of diversity but also a powerful tool for personal and academic growth. The ability to navigate multiple languages enriches students' lives, fostering connections and understanding across cultures. Equally important is the maintenance of their home language, which serves as a crucial foundation for learning additional languages. By supporting the development of home languages, we empower students to deepen their understanding, express complex ideas, and thrive in a global society.
