Stories That Matter: High School Experience Week
TIS Experience Week is not just about the places our students explore; it's about the unforgettable stories they bring back. It’s no surprise that this week is often cherished by our alumni, as it becomes a core memory of their high school journey. During this time, students embark on a blend of adventure, learning, and deep connection with nature, local communities, culture, and conservation. Through treks, shared meals, and community service, they put their classroom knowledge to the test in a global community that truly cares for our planet.
This program allows TIS students to explore incredible destinations while engaging in meaningful community service. This year, our intrepid students traveled to breathtaking locations including: Japan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, and Greece. Each destination offered an opportunity to soak in the local culture while giving back to the community.
In Japan, for instance, students not only visited the iconic Mount Fuji but also took part in a beach clean-up, working alongside locals to protect the beautiful coastline. This rewarding experience blended adventure with environmental stewardship, allowing students to see firsthand the impact of their efforts.

South Africa offered a thrilling exploration of the Aquila Game Reserve, where students learned about wildlife conservation. Their visit to Robben Island deepened their understanding of the country's history, while community service activities fostered a connection to the land and its people. These experiences are not merely educational; they shape empathy and global awareness.

Sri Lanka welcomed students to a turtle sanctuary, where they helped care for endangered species while learning about marine conservation. At the sanctuary, they observed various sea creatures, including Hawksbill turtles, and engaged in hands-on activities, reinforcing their understanding of the importance of protecting marine life.

In the Philippines, after exhilarating diving sessions, students participated in a beach cleanup. They also visited the Olango Wildlife Sanctuary (O.W.I.S.) to observe various birds and mangroves. Students had the opportunity to plant mangroves themselves, which may grow into a beautiful forest in a few years. This sense of shared purpose not only enriched their travel experience but also instilled a strong sense of responsibility toward the environment.

In Greece, students immersed themselves in a rich blend of cultural exploration and conservation activities. They began their journey in Athens, where they visited iconic sites like the Acropolis and the Ancient Agora, gaining insight into Greece's ancient history. A highlight was a hands-on Greek cooking class, where students not only learned to prepare traditional dishes but also discussed the importance of local ingredients and culinary heritage.

South Korea provided a unique blend of tradition and modernity, as students explored cultural landmarks like Gyeongbokgung Palace and the bustling streets of Seoul. They engaged in community service activities, such as cleaning up a local neighbourhood, which highlighted environmental initiatives, while also enjoying hands-on experiences like a Korean cooking class and a thrilling visit to the DMZ, deepening their appreciation for the vibrant culture and history of the region.

Why Community Service Matters
You might ask, why is community service so important on trips like these? It’s simple: it cultivates a sense of purpose. Students return home not just with stories of breathtaking views and cultural experiences, but with a profound understanding of their role in a larger community. They learn that every small action counts, whether it’s picking up litter or supporting local conservation efforts.
Community service during Experience Week teaches students invaluable lessons about compassion, teamwork, and the impact of collective efforts. These experiences help them recognize that they can make a positive difference in the world, no matter where they are.
As they share their stories and experiences, we hope they inspire others to engage with the global community, reminding us all of the importance of connection and stewardship. What stories will you create on your next adventure? The world is full of opportunities waiting for you!
