Cultivating A Strong Reading Culture

May 03, 2024

In celebration of UNESCO World Book Day April 23, the library hosted a school-wide TIS Book Week. From April 22nd to 26th, our school dedicated an entire week to nurturing and promoting literacy, across all grade levels:

Monday, April 22 & Wednesday, April 24 - The Great Big Read-In:

The library was abuzz with excitement as students gathered together for the Great Big Read-In. They immersed themselves in captivating stories, embarking on different journeys and worlds of imagination, and exploring a wide range of literature. It was a heartwarming sight to see students and teachers alike, wrapped up in a book, and sharing their mutual love for reading.

Tuesday, April 23 - Book Swap:

Because being mindful of our environmental footprint is the way of the TIS Tigers, the library hosted a book swap where students brought their old books and traded them for others that sparked their interest. This not only allowed students to refresh their reading collections, but also ensured that their previous books found a new home. By participating in the book swap, students learned about different books, obtained new copies, and were ecologically mindful!

Tuesday, April 23 - Parent Presentation

Book week is not only for students! Parents were treated to an insightful talk by TIS Elementary Vice-Principal, Ms. Yoonhee Jahng, and TIS Library and Information Literacy Specialist, Mrs. Laura Sherriff. The presentation, titled "Supporting Lifelong Readers: Home and School Partnership," offered parents the opportunity to learn and discuss various topics related to the promotion of home reading, and how to cultivate a strong partnership between home and school.

During the lunch period, students could drop by the library to experience their favourite stories come to life, courtesy of Mrs. Orris’s lively narration!

Friday, April 26 - PK to Grade 6 Character Dress Down:

The School became a vibrant stage as students transformed into their favourite book characters. The costume competition was filled with creativity and imagination, with extra points awarded to those who brought along a copy of the book their character belonged to. Our School was a living testament to the power of literature, and the incredible characters that inhabit its pages.
