Look What's in Store for High School Experience Week!
This year's Experience Week won't involve international travel, but high school students will still have some amazing experiences to look forward to. They'll be participating in a staggering number of engaging activities focusing on service, activity and creativity. Here's a list of everything that’s planned for the week of March 8-12:
Urban farmers and environmental educators Cintia Milk and Guilherme Martins from Mighty Greens are back. They'll be on the 5th floor rooftop garden, teaching students how to compost, make DIY planters and design vertical walls.
TIS is also welcoming back Alyson Lundstrom from The Blissful Carrot who will be making pizzas using garden fresh ingredients and microgreens that students have been growing in the classroom during the winter months.
The same artist who previously worked with TIS students to make our paper mache tigers will be joining us for Experience Week again. This time, James Wong will be helping students create mascots for our house teams!
Students will be getting a taste of hip hop culture when performers from the Outbound Street Festival come to the Black Box Theatre to teach hip hop dancing, graffiti art, spray painting on canvas, and break dancing.
TIS parent and Macau Glee Club Founder Emma Seward will be leading students through some amazing dance routines and choreography.
Students will learn the basics of watercolour art from former TIS Artist in Residence, Peta Houghton. They'll be painting on location at the Taipa House Museums.
Secondary teachers Nick Soentgerath and Evan Lemay will be taking students off site to teach them about urban photography, where they'll capture scenes of everyday life in Macau. The session will also include a visit to teamLab Supernature at the Venetian.
Vegetarian cooking will be the focus of a session with Rawlicious Chef and Founder Andreea Apostol.
Students will also learn about healthy and delicious outdoor cooking with Service Learning Coordinator Stephen Boyko.
TIS teachers along with School Nurse Jill Go will be facilitating a session on how to build a terrarium. The indoor gardening containers can then be kept as decorative or ornamental items.
For the sport enthusiast, there are multiple activities to choose from, including sailing at Hac Sa Beach, mini putting at the Venetian, bowling, tennis and cycling.
Students will have the opportunity to work as homeroom helpers in kindergarten and elementary classrooms.
A visit to a home for the elderly has been planned where students will learn more about health conditions affecting the elderly, such as dementia and Alzheimers.
"Hands-on activities, like the ones we've organized for Experience Week, require practice, problem-solving and decision-making," says Service Learning Coordinator Stephen Boyko, adding, "Experiential learning like this provides our students with real opportunities for growth and enhances our curriculum."
