John Powell brings a wealth of international experience to his role as Athletics Director. He holds a Masters in Parks & Recreation (2010) along with a Bachelors in Health & Physical Education (2009) and began his teaching and administrative career in Mexico City, Mexico. After 10 years in Mexico City he moved to Brasília, Brazil. After 4 successful years as the school's first full-time Athletics Director, he moved to this side of the world and was the Director of Sports, Activities, and Camps for the past 2 years at UWC Thailand.
John is a Certified Master Athletic Administrator (CMAA) via the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) which is highly recognized in the United States and international circuit. Other leadership certificates come from the Principals' Training Center for International School Leadership in 2017.
Known for his enthusiasm and extensive knowledge across various after school activities and sports, John is dedicated to enriching student life through diverse and engaging programs. His foundations to his educational approach are Safety, Responsibility, Communication, Sportsmanship and Growth. While one of his greatest priorities is continually finding ways to increase student engagement and participation in sports.
John is a fun-loving person who enjoys being active and spending time with his family, friends, wife (Tania), and two dogs (Bowser & Valiente). He loves traveling and exploring new cultures, making TIS a perfect fit for his professional and personal aspirations.
